SSE5 provides a simulation environment for modeling manufacturing systems that contain a relatively small number of stations and operators. Although SSE5 was designed for apparel manufacturing, it could be used in other manufacturing domains. The SSE5 simulation package is most valuable for small or medium size firms including those that lack the expertise to develop detailed models or have only minimal knowledge in describing manufacturing systems and in analyzing simulation model results. The user does not need to know a simulation language to use SSE5.

SSE5 has been used by a number of apparel manufacturing firms to design new manufacturing modules and to evaluate existing modules. It can be used to design and evaluate modular manufacturing systems with one line and a maximum of 18 stations in a series. Each station may have a maximum of eight machines in parallel, with each machine performing the identical operation. A maximum of 26 operators, of variable efficiency, is allowed. Some operators are assumed to be cross-trained and able to work at any station at varying efficiency and some are fixed at a single workstation. The model assumes unlimited space for work-in-process in front of each station. There must always be enough items in front of the first station to avoid a delay while waiting on an item. Work is done in lots, where a lot may be one or many items. SSE5 also assumes no machine breakdowns.

SSE5 carries the NASA case number MFS-26284. It was originally released as part of the COSMIC Collection.
