Multiple Block Grid Generation Software

Multiple Block Grid Generation Software (GRIDGEN) is a software system for the generation of 3D, multiple block, structured grids. GRIDGEN is a visually-oriented, graphics-based interactive code used to decompose a 3D domain into blocks, distribute grid points on curves, initialize and refine grid points on surfaces and initialize volume grid points. GRIDGEN3D is a batch code used to refine volume grid points. The codes may also be used to generate single block structured grids, single surface structured grids, and overset structured grids.

In GRIDGEN, user control is maintained through menu button selection, mouse point-and-click, and occasional text input. Its interface is designed to be clean, simple and consistent, with a monolithic window divided into permanent, non-overlapping regions for geometry display, menu buttons, text input, diagnostic messages, and multiple entity selection. Three dimensional real-time image manipulation is available at all times, with mouse buttons controlling image panning and zooming and keypad buttons controlling image rotation. On-line help may be accessed anywhere within the code, providing both specific and general information to facilitate code usage.

Database entities, the geometric models of the configurations on and around which grids are to be generated, may be imported into GRIDGEN from an external file. GRIDGEN imports PATRAN v2.5 Neutral Files, IGES files, and GRIDGEN network, segment, and composite files. However, a database is not required to run GRIDGEN. Many simple grids can be generated without a database with the surface grid shapes simply resulting from the shape of the bounding connectors and the grid methods applied by the user.

GRIDGEN carries the NASA case number ARC-13371. It was originally released as part of the NASA COSMIC collection.
